The Story of Diponegoro's War

1. Background of the War

The Diponegoro War (1825–1830) was a major rebellion against Dutch colonial rule in Java. It began because of Dutch interference in the Yogyakarta Sultanate, unfair taxes, and a road construction that passed through Prince Diponegoro’s ancestral graves without permission.

2. Main Figures

a. Prince Diponegoro: The leader of the resistance.

b. The Dutch (Netherlands): The colonial power enforcing unjust policies.

3. Course of the War

Diponegoro led guerrilla tactics to fight back, with support from villagers, religious leaders, and common people. The war spread widely across Central Java.

4. End of the War

In 1830, Diponegoro was captured through deceit during peace talks in Magelang. He was then exiled to Makassar, where he spent the rest of his life.
